The final look of the animation

I've added the oil paint background to my artwork.

The final oil paint background

I've finished the oil paint background. Here is a picture of the finalised painting.

The writing part

Last week involved writing on my supportive narrative. Not my favorite part because it is so incredibly time consuming. But the good thing is that I'm almost there. Today I will be writing a case study on my own creation. After this I have to write the conclusion and add some refining to the written pieces and a little bit of lay-out. And then It will be finished. Hurray!.

I still wanted to upload some picture's so here is some artwork that I've made the week before. These are some visuals that represent the colours and looks of the animation. It shows the colour contrast between the girls realistic world and her fantasy world.

The backgrounds oilpainting process

These are some photo's of my backgrounds oil painting process. The third image is a rough black and white (and 1 colourtone) digital sketch that I use to make my black and white underpainting on canvas (the light I will ad digitally to the final painting). The second image is the underpainting that I've made with acrylic paint. This gives me an idea of shading and contrast. As an example for colour I use the visual that I've made for my postcard. Normally this would be a rough colour sketch. The first image is a photo of the first layer of oil paint. The next step is to add detail and more shading and dept in the second layer of oil paint. To be continued...

Tracing backgrounds on canvas in a temperature of 30 degrees celsius.

Last week I had to trace some of my backgrounds on canvas. I want to use oil paint for my backgrounds. So I have prepared a few canvasses of 50 X 60 cm with gesso, and a midtone acryl paint layer. In this picture you can see my construction to project my background sketches with a beamer onto the canvasses so I could trace them in pencil. A bit of improvising was neccecary. If you are wondering what the coke bottle is doing there. It prevents the canvas from falling down. Normally I would not bother to stand on a chair in the heath of the beamer, but this day it was about 30 degrees outside, and a few more inside including the heath of the beamer. So I had to wrap my hands in toilet paper to prevent smudging on the canvas. :-D

Here is a character sketch of the cat-butterfly creatures.

Animation visual no.2

This is a second visual for my animation that I've made to give a impression what the finished animation will look like. I am not sure yet about the colours of the flying animals but for now I will leave them like this. Today I will work on sketches for some backgrounds and set them up on canvas. Hopefully I can begin with painting the underpaintings for these backgrounds this weekend.

Preview moving storyboard

These are small preview's of my moving storyboard. The storyboard is still a bit in a rough fase as it comes to sketches, acting and timing. I'm going to work that out in the key-animation-fase. The complete animated short will be around the 7 - 8 minutes.

Some of my latest character sketches

These are some of my latest character sketches that I've made last week.

About my graduation project

Her is some more information about my gradutation project. I'm developing a production package for an animated short. It is a contemporary adaptation of H.C. Andersens fairy tale " The little match seller". A very sad story, but somehow it has captured my heart. I find it very beautiful and interesting because of the shift between fantasy and real life and the strong emotions.

During my graduation period there is not inough time to complete the full short. So that's the reason for making a production package (character designs, concept storyboards, a moving storyboard, painted backgrounds and one or more animation samples. The project also involves a full subject research and written thesis (supportive narrative).

Project Postcard

Finally I've decided to place my first post on my blog. Because keeping a blog can be time consuming I did not post anything yet. A other thing that kept me from posting is that I am worried that I make a lot of mistake's in my english. Ofcourse these are all some lame excuses :-) And I am posting this now because I should be working on my project but instead I'm persuing in SAB (study avoiding behaviour).

Yesterday, I've worked on a postcard for my graduation project and this is the result. We can use these postcards as promotion material during the graduation excibit at september 11 th.
